If you’re anything like me, you dress for the weather. I live in a swampland from April-September, so my wardrobe consists of skirts and sleeveless dresses. I’m not exactly prepared for the sub-arctic temperatures that the office can get to in the summer. Why, exactly, does any building need to be so cold in the summer time? In order to fight the AC, I decided to crochet something colorful that I could put over my shoulders or my lap to combat the refrigerator-like atmosphere of many offices. And yes, I know September is here, but this is still useful in the winter, and you’ll have it ready to go when the AC goes into overdrive again in March.
I decided to use the mosaic tile stitch, as it is my new favorite square. You can make it as colorful or as monochrome as you would like. For this pattern, I’ll be following what I did, which was to use three different colors. The border is adapted from border #24 in Edie Eckman’s book Around the Corner Crochet Borders, a worthy investment. There is also plenty of flexibility to shape this any way you want. I went with something longer, to wrap around my shoulders, but if you prefer a square, no problem!
A note about granny squares
I love making granny squares. They’re so portable and quick to stitch up. However, I HATE sewing them all together. This is why I’m serious when I say I wish I could hire someone to do all the sewing up. But since that will never happen, I crocheted 8 squares at a time, 4 of each color pattern. I stitched the 8 together, like so.
It broke up all the unpleasantness.
What you’ll need:
Worsted weight yarn- I used Caron Simply Soft Brites in Limelight and Blue Mint, with pink stash yarn for stitching and border
tr3tog= triple crochet 3 together: yo twice, insert hook into stitch and pull up loop, (yo, pull through 2 loops) twice, [(yo) twice, insert hook into same stitch and pull up a loop, (yo, pull through 2 loops) twice] two times, yo and pull through all 4 loops on hook.
Gauge: each square is ~3.5″
Size: With a layout of 4×14 squares, plus a border, 17.5″W x 58″L
Time needed for project: About all of the NBC primetime and weekend Olympics coverage.
