This past summer, sweating water glasses and new furniture drove me to create the most delicious looking coaster set ever. I certainly still love these, but for some reason, donuts scream summer to me. Since I’m looking to add more fall colors to our living room, I’ve come up with a new set of Autumn Coasters certain to wow those Thanksgiving guests!
These coasters were once again created with my beloved, and easy to find, crafting felt. You’ll need enough for the backing at the character detail, which you can find the templates for here. In addition to felt of various colors, you’ll also need a background fabric. I stumbled across mine at our local recycling center. I picture this material as something a posh British man would wear hunting. It is, therefore, perfect.
For each coaster:
Cut two 4.5 in x 4.5 in. of background felt. Round corners slightly.
Cut one 4 in. x 4 in. of background fabric. Round corners slightly.
Cut one template character
Center the fabric on one piece of felt, pin in place and sew the edges. A simple zig-zag stitch would be suitable for this, but pay attention to the type of fabric you’re working with. My woven hunting fabric frays easily, so I used a fancier machine appliqué stitch, or fusion paper would help.
Center your pumpkin/leaf/apple/acorn on your sewn fabric/felt backing and pin in place. Here you can either hand stitch or machine sew this in place. I hand stitched mine in the car during a Vermont roadtrip, but a machine would have worked as well.
After all sewing details are complete, use the second piece of 4.5 x 4.5 in felt as the backing, machine stitching along the very edge of the two felt pieces. This covers up the stitching mess for a nice clean backing to the coaster.
Now that you have our autumn coasters, stay tuned for our winter set! And in the meantime, check out our matching Autumn bunting!
