This is an incredibly easy, very quick hat to make in pretty much any size. And when I say quick, I mean quick. I went from concept to finish in just 3 episodes of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend on Netflix.

This hat is made in a cylinder formation. So, instead of increasing or decreasing stitches, you’re going to stitch the number of stitches you’ll need for the hat to fit, then just keep adding rows, and sew the top together. So easy!

What you’ll need:

Bulky weight yarn (Color A): I used Loops and Threads Charisma, in off-white

Worsted weight yarn (Color B): Any accent color you want, but I like the multi-colored effect

I hook

Stitches:

Foundation Double Crochet (FDC) If you need a tutorial, check out this video from mooglyblog

Double Crochet (DC)

Single Crochet (sc)

Single crochet decrease (sc dec)

These instructions are for a 3-6 month old size. For larger sizes, just increase the number of stitches in your FDC until you get the size you need.

Hat:

Row 1: With Color A, FDC 40, (40 DC), join

Foundation Chain

Row 2: Ch 2, DC in each stitch around, (40 DC), join

Repeat 7 times, for a total of 9 rows (plus your base) (but keep going if you want your hat to be bigger!)

Cylinder hat

Do not fasten off, begin on first earflap.

Earflap:

Row 1: 10 sc, turn

Row 2: Ch 1, sc dec in first two stitches, sc across, (9sc) turn

Row 3: Ch 1, sc dec in first two stitches, sc across, (8sc) turn

Continue to decrease with the first two stitches, until you have three stitches

Row 9: Ch 1, sc dec, ch 3, sc (2 stitches, and one ch 3 space for your braid)

Fasten off.

Fold the hat in half, insert hook into the space you want your second earflap to go, then repeat. Before fastening off, sc around the base of the hat. Fasten off.

Now, go back to the top of the hat, where you did your foundation double crochet. Fold the hat at the seam, like so.

Add braids to the ear flaps in Color B.

With Color B, make two pom poms, and fasten securely in each corner. For help with pom poms, check out this tutorial.  If you don’t like making pom poms (I don’t!), knot several strands of yarn around each corner.
