Things have been a bit on the quiet side here on The Crafty Cats lately, but rest assured we have good reason.  Kelli is planning a wedding that is somehow less than 2 months away, and I have been keeping busy with a tiny tyrant who is somehow already 2 months old!  But before this boy made his appearance, I took a few steps to personalize his future space.

A great gift we received well before his arrival, was a Graco Pack n  Play Playard.  It was always our intention to use this portable crib in our bedroom until the baby was old enough to move into his own.  The only downside of this affordable unit, was the toy bar.  There is nothing wrong with green stars, however, I felt they were a bit…uninspired.  Luckily, they are super easy to switch out with something more colorful and theme worthy: owls!

In this particular Pack N Play model (and most others, I believe) toys are attached to the bar via velcro.  In order to fully utilize the rest of the toy bar, I removed the velcro from the stars to reuse.  This was simply done using a seam ripper.  The stars were still in good shape afterwards, and two of the three are currently cat toys (they slide really well on hard wood floors).

As for the owls, I used my own Woodland Creature pattern in three bright colors of felt.  (Not owl obsessed? Check out my fox, raccoon, hedgehog, bear, trees, etc, etc.).  After cutting out the template and before sewing the owl together, I stitched the same piece of velcro from the star on to the backing of the owl.  With the velcro in place, I could stitch and stuff the owl and attach it to the toy bar.

These owls are the perfect size and a cheery addition to your little ones temporary home.  I hope this kid loves owls as much as I do!
