free crochet pattern pineapple pincushion
crochet Pincushion

In addition to creating things with yarn, I’ve decided to add sewing to my repertoire. This spring, while sewing a skirt (don’t look TOO closely at the construction) and bunting for my wedding, I realized I was missing something: a pincushion (along with a seam ripper, thread that is not black or white, a high-quality sewing machine, and a few other things). Instead of buying one, I decided I should crochet one. And since I will eat pineapple until my mouth is in pain, I opted to make a pineapple pincushion.

What you need:

Worsted weight yarn: I used Vanna’s Choice in Lemon (A) and Fern (B)

E and F hooks

Tapestry needle

Fiber fill

Time: You can complete this in the time it takes to stream Moonlight on Amazon Prime (just under two hours)

Note: Using such a small hook with worsted weight yarn makes this thick enough to hold pins. It does, however, make it a bit tougher on your dominant hand and elbow, so you might want to take a break halfway through. The second time I made this, I switched to the F hook for the green leaves. It didn’t really change the way it looked much, but it did make it easier on my hand.

Stitches used:

sc= single crochet

BLO=back loops only

FLO=front loops only

sc2tog= single crochet decrease

sl st= slip stitch

hdc=half-double crochet

DC=double crochet

The pattern:

With yellow yarn (A) and E hook, form a loop, ch 1

Rd 1- 8 sc in loop, join, ch 1 (does not count as 1st sc here and throughout pattern)

Rd 2- 2 sc in each st around (16), join, ch 1

Rd 3- 1 sc in first st, 2 sc in next st, repeat around (24), join, ch 1

Rd 4- 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in next 2 stitches, repeat around (32), join, ch 1

Rd 5- BLO- 1 sc in each st around (32), join, ch 1

Rd 6-14- 1 sc in each st around (32), join, ch 1

Rd 15- sc2tog over 1st 2 st, sc in next 2 st, repeat around

Rd 16- sc2tog over 1st 2 st, sc in next st, repeat around

*Stuff with fiber fill, fasten off A, join B

Rd 17- sc2tog around (8), join to front loop of first stitch in the row

*Round 18 has two parts: The first is in the FLO of round 17, the second in the BLO of round 17. You can switch to an F hook here to give your hand a break.

Rd 18- FLO, ch 6, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 2, hdc in next 2, sl st in front loop of next sc, repeat around, forming 8 pineapple leaves

Rd 18- BLO, ch 8, sl st in 2nd & 3rd ch from hook, sc in next 2, hdc in next 2, DC in last. Skip next sc, sl st in following sc, repeat around, forming 4 pineapple leaves

Fasten off, and sew the top closed. (This will also help the second round of pineapple leaves stand up.)
