Now that you’ve made Max’s crown for your little beast, you’re probably wondering: how can any good Max get a good rumpus going without a scepter? Don’t fear, we’ve got that covered too. Only we’ve turned that scepter into a rattle, because why not? This pattern uses the same gold yarn as the crown, and while it does include a few more supplies to keep its shape, and, you know, rattle, it is also a very quick project.

WARNING: if your little one is still really little and has a habit of putting all manner of things in his/her mouth, be sure to use this with supervision.

What you need:

Yarn- I used Loops & Threads Impeccable in Gold

H hook

3/8″ dowel, cut to ~9 in.

Poly-fil

Rattle noisemakers

stitch markers

tape measure/ruler

Stitches used:

HDC= half-double crochet

sc= single crochet

sc2tog= single crochet decrease

scepter rattle

For this pattern, you will not join and chain one at the end of each row. For the handle, you’ll continue to stitch in the round until you have 6 inches. For the rattle, you’ll want to use a stitch marker to keep count, but depending on your tension and the actual length of your dowel, may need to add extra rows- or eliminate them- in the middle.

Pattern:

Handle

Rd 1- Make an adjustable loop. In loop, 6 HDC

Rd 2- In BLO of 1st round, sc around

Continue to sc in the round, without joining (and through both loops) until you have 6 inches

Rattle

Rd 1- 2 sc in each st around, do not join

Rd 2- 2 sc in 1st st, 1 in next st, repeat around

Rd 3- 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in next 2 st, repeat around

Rd 4- 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in next 3 st, repeat around

Rd 5- 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in next 4 st, repeat around

Rd 6-10 sc in each st

Note: This is where you may need to add or eliminate rows. Insert the dowel at this point, so you can get a better idea of how many rows you need.

Rd 11- sc2tog over 1st two st, sc in next 4, repeat around

Rd 12- sc2tog over 1st two st, sc in next 3, repeat around

Rd 13- sc2tog over 1st two st, sc in next 2, repeat around

Fill with poly-fil and a rattle piece or 2. Continue to stuff as you crochet it closed.

Rd 14- sc2tog over 1st two st, sc in next st, repeat around

Rd 15- sc2tog around

Rd 16-17 sc in each st around to create the knob on top. Finish with a sl st, do not fasten off.

sl st down to rd 13 (base of the knob)

Ch 7, attach to rattle about halfway down with a sl st, continue chaining until you can join to the base of the rattle with a sl st

Turn, sc in each ch, back to the top of the rattle.

Sl st over ~2 stitches, repeat 3 times. Fasten off and weave in your ends.
