As a Christmas present, Holli asked me to make her husband and son matching hats in the team colors of the Miami Dolphins. Then I realized just how many people I could check off my holiday gift-giving list with this hat in the colors of their favorite team. Then I also realized, as I was trying it on for size, that if I just stopped after the 9th round, I’d have a pretty good messy bun hat.

Because I was working with adult and almost-one-year-old sized heads, the pattern is for adults and toddlers. I apologize for not having a child-sized hat, but I don’t have a child’s head to put it on, and it seems weird and creepy to randomly ask children in the neighborhood to put a hat on for me. Since the adult hat has 48 rows in the band, and the toddler, 40, try 44 rows for a child and take it from there. (Then, let me know how it works out, and we can update this.)

This pattern works from the bottom up. You’ll start with the band at the bottom, working in rows. Once you join that together, you’ll be working in rounds, by single crocheting in the end of each row of the band. The rounds will alternate using single crochet and double crochet, so color B will be thinner stripes. Don’t fasten off each color after every round: carry your yarn up to the next row to avoid lots of ends to sew in.

You’ll need bulky yarn and a K hook. I used more than one brand of yarn: both Bernat Softee Chunky and Loops and Threads Charisma, because I needed very specific colors, and not every color I needed was available in both yarns. Just make sure it’s bulky, and you’ll be fine!

Because of the bulky yarn and the simple stitches, this works up very quickly. You can easily put this off until Christmas Eve and finish it in only one sitting of A Christmas Story!
