When a good friend of mine recently had a baby boy named Max, I immediately thought of Max from Where the Wild Things Are. And every good Max needs a crown and a scepter to declare a start to the wild rumpus.

crown crochet pattern

But when I thought of making a crown, I realized that if it didn’t fit perfectly, it wasn’t going to work. That’s when I came up with the idea of working the crown up in rows, increasing to a point, then decreasing, and adding velcro to adjust the size. I used sticky velcro to stick the dots right on there, but if you think you need a little extra strength, go ahead and break out the glue gun. And if you are making this for someone whose head isn’t growing so rapidly anymore, there’s no reason you can’t sew the ends together to make the size permanent.

Once you finish the first peak, you get into a nice rhythm, and this works up very quickly- great for a last minute costume or birthday!

What you need:

H hook

Worsted weight yarn- I used Loops & Threads Impeccable in Gold

Self-adhesive velcro, or velcro pieces and a hot glue gun

Stitches used:

sc=single crochet

sc2tog= single crochet decrease
